I recently put a 2" x 1 1/2" gouge in my silver metal flake gelcoat on my gunnel on the front port side. There was no damage to the fiberglass. The gelcoat just chipped away right to the fiberglass when it made contact with a rock wall while going under a low, narrow arched bridge.
Can anyone give me an idea how much it would cost to have someone repair it. And would it be possible to repair it myself?

I doubt you will be able to repair the damage yourself. Repairing gelcoat with metal flake is extremely difficult and takes an experienced hand. Its also relatively expensive. I had a couple of deep scratches on my gunnel and one sizable chip and it cost over $700 to repair.

Another problem is finding someone that can do the work correctly. A poorly done job will be very noticeable as the flake will puddle and look bad. Also, some shops use inferior gel and after about a year, it begins to yellow and look bad. There used to be a guy in the Richmond area that was excellent at fiberglass and gel work and he was reasonable. I don't remember his name or if he is even doing the work anymore. Mike, the service manager at Anna Point Marina (540-895-5656) may be able to put you in touch with him or recommend someone else. The marina is often called upon to have work done on boats and I'm not sure who they are using now.

Good Luck.
